PROLOGUE
The first edition of this book was published in 1995. The actual
preparation started many years earlier with the assembly of notes
on service and design. The notes were usually prepared as a result
of some happening or occurrence at a client's pool. Most of the
data, therefore is based on actual situations.
It
has always been my contention that designers and operators at one
location can benefit greatly by learning and absorbing the experience
of individuals at other installations. This publication, with its
"helpful hints", is a result of my 50 years in the swimming
pool industry as well as the actual experience of others involved
with the design and operation of pool complexes all over the world.
The swimming pool and aquatic recreational facility industry has
changed dramatically since the boom growth of residential and commercial
pools in the 50's and 60's. Some pools built prior to that period,
with original equipment, are still in service. In contrast, new
pools that have incorporated current technology are very different
from older pools. Manually operated systems that are labor intensive
with damp, dingy, inaccessible equipment pits have been replaced
with bright, dry, and highly automated equipment areas. In addition,
the advanced education and professionalism of operating personnel
has enhanced their effectiveness and efficiency.
The total concept of pool operation and care that encompasses the
entire natatorium, combined with the actual multi-purpose activities
of the pool, as well as operation of all the related equipment,
leads to a better understanding of what is required to provide any
complex with what is common to all operations; clean, sanitary water
available to a broad spectrum of people and activities.
