Project Profile:

State Aquatic Centre
Marion, South Australia

When the State Aquatic Centre opened its doors to the public in April 2011, it brought elite aquatic sports back to South Australia. The facility is compliant with the requirements of FINA, the world governing body for diving, water polo, synchronized and open water swimming, making it ideal for hosting both national and select international events. Since opening, it has been recognized as one of the finest competitive swimming centers in the world.

The State Aqutic Centre boasts 6 pools including a 10-lane, 3m deep competition pool, a 55m X 25m X 3m-5m deep dive pool, a 25m program pool, a 15m X 12m X 1m deep learn-to-swim pool, a toddler pool, a splashpad deck featuring mini watrslides, valves, water cannons, a dump bucket and other attractions and a slide entry pool. There are also two ooutdoor waterslides, both which flow from a 15m high access tower.

This state-of-the-art facility was created utilizing th latest aquatic technology including Myrtha's stainless steel framing system and Neptune-Benson's Defender® regenerative media filters. The Defender's® efficient footprint requires 75% less construction space on average than an equivalent sand filter, allowing Myrtha's designers to utilize the area under the facility's bulkhead to store the overflow tank and the area undre the deck around the pools to house the filter room. The 6 copact Defender® filters and related system components installed at the State Aquatic Centre filter nearly 2,600,000 gallons of water across the facility's varoius pools and attractions.

The Defender's® award-winning design also provides a number of significant environmental and operational benefits. "The pools use Defender® regenerative media filters, which provide superior water quality by filtering down to 1 micron and removing over 99.9% of crypto in a single pass" said John Mandelt, Water Treatment Manager with AVP Pools, the facility's aqutic system designer. "These filters also save significant amounts of money on backwash water and associated energy costs."

The Defender® filter generates 90% less water & waste from backwash, requires 30% less chemicals & fuel, and 50% less electrical energy, all while providing pristine water quality which helps to create the fastest competition pool possible.
